Hardening Off: Preparing the Plant for Life in the Field

When seedlings reach the appropriate stage of development, growers begin a process known as hardening off.

Rather than encouraging faster growth, they gradually reduce certain comforts.

Watering becomes less frequent.

Ventilation is increased.

The young plants are progressively exposed to environmental conditions that more closely resemble those they will encounter after transplanting.

This controlled exposure strengthens plant tissues, encourages root development, and improves the seedlings' ability to withstand wind, temperature fluctuations, and transplant shock.
