1. Defining the Tobacco to Be Grown

Before planting begins, growers must first consider what type of tobacco they want to produce.

Not every tobacco leaf serves the same purpose. In a premium cigar, leaves may ultimately be selected for the filler, binder, or wrapper, and each role requires different characteristics.

Wrapper tobacco, for example, is generally selected for qualities such as appearance, elasticity, texture, and combustion. Filler and binder tobaccos have their own requirements and contribute differently to the cigar's structure, strength, aroma, and overall character.

In other words, the future cigar begins taking shape before the first plant ever reaches the field.

2. Selecting the Tobacco Variety

Genetics provides the plant with its potential.

Different tobacco varieties can produce different leaf characteristics and respond differently to growing conditions. But genetics alone does not create exceptional tobacco.

Soil, climate, water, agricultural practices, harvesting, curing, fermentation, and aging all contribute to the final result.

This is one reason the same tobacco genetics grown in different regions can develop noticeably different characteristics.

3. Selecting and Preserving the Seed

 

The tobacco seed may be tiny, but its importance is enormous.

Careful seed selection helps growers preserve the desired characteristics of a particular variety. Proper storage is also important because seed viability can be affected by age and environmental conditions.

And from something incredibly small begins a journey that will eventually produce the leaves used to create a premium cigar.
